The Institute of Vocational Education and Adult Education pursues a wide range of research activities on vocational and in-company initial and continuing training, education in adulthood, the qualification of pedagogical staff and the support of disadvantaged people. Cross-cutting issues such as digitisation, professionalisation and diversity are the main focus.

The Institute of Vocational Education and Adult Education pursues a wide range of research activities on vocational and in-company initial and continuing training, education in adulthood, the qualification of pedagogical staff and the support of disadvantaged people. Cross-cutting issues such as digitisation, professionalisation and diversity are the main focus.

Our main areas of research:

  • Teaching and learning processes and their design in industrial-technical vocational training,
  • Occupational requirements, their change and consequences for the design of initial and continuing vocational education and training,
  • Vocational education and training in international comparison,
  • Quality assurance and development in vocational schools,
  • School management and teaching staff in complex school development processes,
  • Changes in the constitutional conditions of continuing education (social transformation processes, institutional/organizational structural changes),
  • Programme development as well as professional planning and management as a field of professionalisation for adult education (education management, education controlling),
  • Teaching-learning processes in further education and their meso-/microdidactic design,
  • Individual participation in continuing education in specific fields and regions,
  • Digitisation and diversity as cross-cutting issues,
  • Development of theoretical concepts and metastructures of work-oriented, pre-vocational and vocational education of disadvantaged people,
  • Structures and offers of vocational support for disadvantaged persons,
  • Curriculum, methodology and didactics of vocational support education,
  • Theory and empiricism of career choice and decision-making processes,
  • Target groups and integration perspectives in the promotion of vocational disadvantaged persons

In the above-mentioned fields, the Institute also undertakes advisory tasks for politics, administration, business and educational institutions.
